Douglas qualified
in 1990 at St Thomas’s Hospital, London. After
his pre-registration year working at hospitals in
London and Reading, he completed officer training
at Sandhurst and commenced a two year attachment
as a primary care doctor with the Parachute Regiment.
Following basic surgical training, he decided on a
career in General Surgery and his higher surgical training
took him from Haslar Hospital in Gosport to Plymouth
and Johannesburg, South Africa. Having developed an
interest in colorectal surgery, his subspeciality training
was undertaken at Oxford and St Mark’s Hospital
in London. His Certificate of
Completion of Surgical Training (CCST) was
awarded in February 2005 and he is a member of The
Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and
Ireland.
Having attained the final General Surgery
Fellowship examination, Douglas and his wife Cara returned
to Johannesburg for a six-month fellowship in paediatric
surgery. They returned to England, in order for Douglas
to take up an appointment as a Consultant General Surgeon
in the Defence Medical Services at The Heart of England
NHS Foundation Trust in October 2005.
